5 Simple Grass Planting Tips for a Lush Green Lawn

Planting and sowing grass can be extremely frustrating for most people when they try it out for the first time. So many things can cause the grass not to grow, turn brown or otherwise not take hold that you can easily make a mistake. Fortunately, the vast majority of those mistakes are easily fixed by following some simple tips. Here are five simple, but vital tips to a beautiful green lawn:

1. Coffee Grounds

Yep…Coffee grounds. When you finish making your coffee each morning, don’t throw out those grounds. Instead, keep them and sprinkle them in the areas that you have planted. If you have areas that are having trouble grabbing hold, you can try adding some coffee grounds there as well. The coffee has nutrients that will feed your lawn beautifully.

 2. Plant at the Proper Time

Many people shoot themselves in the foot before they even get started by planting their new lawn during the wrong season. The best time to plant it is during the fall when the temperatures are more moderate and dependable. The temperature is ideal when it hovers around 60 degrees, so fall is the right time for most areas.

 3. Aerate at the Right Time

The most effective time is early in the morning according to most experts, but some say it works fantastically after a rain. The problem with the rainy aeration is the mud, and the tracks you will leave behind. Best to do it early in the morning when there is a light dew at the most.

4. Mix Your Grass

When you plant several types of grasses you are hedging your bets to a degree. Because different types of grass can be more susceptible to differing problems, mixing the grasses can allow you to weather the typical problems. There is little reason to panic about diseases with your lawn when you have other resistant types of grass to fill in the gaps.

5. Know When To Mow

Unless you want to burn your grass up, never mow it during the heat of the day. Mow early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperatures are more reasonable. Your body will appreciate the heat break as well. Obviously you should never mow when it is wet either. The grass will get damaged and not cut properly anyway. Stick to the mornings and evenings on nice days.

These simple steps are the basics, but they are certainly powerful. If you follow even these basics, you are likely to have a lawn that you can be proud of. A great lawn is not as tough as it might seem. You just have to know when to do the right things and when to let it rest.

  5. Mowing when wet is unavoidable when you live in the Pacific Northwest. It just takes some extra care of your mower, and if your mower blades are sharp, the grass won’t be damaged. If we waited until it was dry to mow, we’d NEVER mow! lol
