Summer is upon us! The days are full of possibilities! Unfortunately, for many families, this means the days need to be full of fun activities to keep the kids busy too. The good news is that you can have a fun-filled summer with your children–without breaking the bank. Here are 20 free or cheap summer activities your children are sure to love!


  1. Play in the Sprinkler
  2. Pack a lunch and head to the beach
  3. Visit the Library: Many libraries have programs perfect for kids. FREE Reading programs for the kids
  4. Go for a Bike ride
  5. Tour a Local Factory: Do you have an ice cream, chocolate or candy factory nearby? See if you can take a tour!
  6. Visit the Farmer’s Market
  7. Grow Your Own Garden
  8. Go Bowling for Free: If you live in a participating city, you only have to pay for shoes!
  9. Play with Sidewalk Chalk – Check out these awesome ideas
  10. Attend Your Local Dollar Movie Theater: Many theaters offer special kids passes. Call and see if yours does.
  11. Go Camping: Can’t get away? Set up the tent in the backyard.
  12. Visit Your Town’s Free Attractions
  13. Walk Around the Mall: If you can resist buying everything, this is a great way for the kids to get some energy out.
  14. Attend Free Concerts in the Park
  15. Do Homemade Crafts: Pinterest is full of great ideas!
  16. Play Board Games

  18. Volunteer in Your Community: There are tons of ways to help–and they are usually free.
  19. Put on a Magic Show
  20. Photograph Your Town: Give the kids a camera and drive around. You’ll love seeing what they come up with.
  21. Take Up a Sport: Sports don’t have to require expensive registration fees or uniforms. Grab a ball and head to the park as a family!

  5. I love the whole concept of this post! Indeed, there is no need to spend a lot of money just to have fun. It’s nice to see them enjoy the simple stuff, for that’s how we know we made it as parents and not just as providers.
