Frugal Meal Planning

The cost of groceries continues to rise for all of us.  With every trip to the grocery store, we get less and less for our money. Fortunately, if we plan our meals frugally, there are ways to get the most of our grocery trips.

Here are some frugal meal planning tips for great meals on a budget

Check Out The Sales at Simplee Thrifty

Check out what’s on sale at your favorite grocery store and plan 3-4 of your meals around the items that are on sale that week.  Generally the store circulars come out a few days before the sales begin. To make the deals even better, look through coupon sites, or posts on your favorite coupon blog to see if there are coupons available you can print and pair with the sales.

Buy Fruits & Veggies In Season

Plan your fruits and veggies around the items that are in season. They will be less expensive because the stores will have more of them.  For instance, March is National Fresh Celery month.  Plan some snacks of celery in March and plan for soups that include celery like chicken noodle. April is National Florida Tomato month. Plan some meals utilizing tomatoes like BLTs or make some homemade sauce.  You can store what you don’t use for future use.

Stock Up

Buy meats according to when they are on sale and stock up.  In March, you can find good deals on corned beef because March 17th is National Corned Beef Day.  You can turn this into two meals by having corned beef and cabbage one night, and corned beef sandwiches the next night.  Ham is great to stock up on during April due to the Easter holiday. Stock up on chicken wings around the super-bowl.

Buy in Bulk

Buy kitchen staples in bulk like sugar and flour, and make usually pre-packaged foods from scratch for future use, that way as you plan your menu, you will have a few things already in the house you can add to your weekly plan.  For example, a huge way supermarkets make money is pre-packaged convenience foods. One such food is cake mixes. Did you know you can easily mix up homemade cake mixes and store them away for future use? Browse the web and for an easy cake mix recipe and storage instructions. When you are planning your desserts for the week, you will have an easy cake mix already stored in your closet, saving you a few dollars at the store. Also, keep staples like rice and pasta on hand. There are hundreds of recipes you can make out of either one of these and they are good go-to foods if you know you are going to be busy and will need a quick easy meal.

It takes a little time, but it is all worth the effort! When you plan a few meals around sales and coupons, a few around in-season fruits and meats, and plan a few from staples you have in your kitchen from buying bulk, you should be able to plan a tasty variety of meals for your family without breaking the bank at the grocery store. 🙂
